In recent years, eLearning has become increasingly popular, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic forced many students to attend classes remotely. While eLearning offers numerous benefits, it can be challenging when motivating eLearning students to engage in online activities with their peers.

This is because online learning often lacks the social and interactive components that students enjoy in traditional classrooms. However, with the right strategies, educators can motivate eLearning students to engage in online activities with other students. In this essay, we will discuss some effective ways to do so.

Encourage Collaboration and Group Work

Collaboration and group work are effective ways to motivate eLearning students to engage with their peers. Group work promotes interaction and helps students build relationships with each other, which can lead to a more enjoyable and meaningful learning experience. To encourage group work, educators can use tools such as Zoom breakout rooms or Google Docs to facilitate collaboration and communication between students.

Create a Sense of Community

Creating a sense of community is essential in eLearning environments. When students feel connected to their classmates and instructors, they are more likely to engage in online activities. Provide incentives in eLearning activities

Incentives are a powerful motivator for motivating eLearning students to engage in online activities. I have seen in many instances in online education the development of games that give up prices for students that perform their best during the activity.

One time, the instructor needed some kind of motivation for students to finish a series of readings on time for class. We introduced a system where students read the material and the eLearning activities contained questions that would provide a badge of completion and a batch for completing the activities in the least amount of time.

Use gamification techniques for online education

Gamification techniques, such as points, levels, and leaderboards, can make online activities more engaging and enjoyable. Like I mentioned in the above section, games can help in motivating eLearning students to engage in activities

By incorporating game elements into online education, educators can motivate students to participate in eLearning activities and compete with their peers in a fun and interactive way. You can work with an instructional designer in building modules that contain games such as treasure hunting (not literal), multilevel structured games, and so on.

Incorporate real-world applications in eLearning activities

Incorporating real-world applications into eLearning courses can help in motivating eLearning students to engage with their peers. When students see the relevance of their coursework to their daily lives or future careers, they are more likely to participate in online discussions or group projects.

For example, educators can use case studies or simulations to demonstrate how the concepts taught in class apply to real-world situations. For example, in online education we see many eLearning activities that contain the study of cases, scenarios, and branching scenarios. These are usually constructed using real cases that the instructor has some experience on.

Provide opportunities in eLearning activities for self-expression

Providing opportunities for self-expression can help motivating eLearning students engage in online activities. When students are allowed to express their opinions or share their experiences, they are more likely to feel connected to their peers and the learning experience. In online education I have seen instructors use tools such as blogs or online journals to allow students to reflect on their coursework and share their thoughts with their classmates.

Instructors can design question prompts to start discussion forums and allow students to participate with a number of comments. For example, they could comment on their main prompt, comment to another eLearning student’s reply, and then comment into another forum. Additionally, you can ask them to compose a one page opinion on their experience in the forums and what they learned during the experience.

Offer personalized feedback to each eLearning student

Offering personalized feedback can help in motivating eLearning students to engage in online activities. When students receive feedback on their assignments or contributions to group projects, they are more likely to feel valued and motivated to continue participating. Educators can use tools such as online grading systems or personalized comments to provide feedback to their students.

Additionally, you can create eLearning activities where students have to grade other students, or where they have to produce feedback on the work of their peers. Some Learning Management tools have an option for such an assignment.

When students know what is required of them, they are more likely to engage in online activities and contribute to group projects. Educators can use rubrics or guidelines to provide clear expectations for online activities.

When students feel safe and supported, they are more likely to participate in online discussions or group projects.
